Pap Smear Q&A

What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear is a routine health screening tool used to detect cervical cancer and other abnormalities. Women should start Pap smear screenings around age 21. If results are normal, screenings are typically repeated every three years until age 65.

For women 30 and older, co-testing with a Pap smear and human papillomavirus (HPV) testing may be recommended. If both tests are negative, co-testing may only be needed every five years. HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection, and certain strains are linked to a higher risk of cervical cancer.

What happens during a Pap smear?

The Pap smear is part of a pelvic exam and takes just a few minutes. During the procedure, a small speculum is gently inserted to provide a clear view of the cervix. A soft brush is then used to collect superficial cervical cells, which are sent to a lab to check for abnormalities, including pre-cancerous cells related to HPV.

Is a pelvic exam necessary for a Pap smear?

We understand that pelvic exams can sometimes cause anxiety, especially for those recovering from trauma or coping with PTSD. At Diamond Touch, we provide sensitive, trauma-informed care, guiding you through every step of your visit to ensure a comfortable and empowering experience.

Our mission is to help you take control of your health by educating you about preventive care and natural ways to maintain cervical health.
